Acupuncture is a traditional form of Chinese medicine that’s been practiced for more than 2500 years. It’s based on the premise that your body has patterns of energy flow, or qi, which are essential for optimal health and wellness. Anytime your qi is interrupted, you may experience illness.
Your qi flows through meridians in your body, so when Dr. Jordan inserts tiny needles into specific points along these meridians, it helps rebalance your energy flow, thus restoring you to better health. Acupuncture alleviates pain and promotes your body’s natural ability to heal itself, too.
There are several theories of how acupuncture works to alleviate pain and discomfort. In addition to balancing your qi, it’s also thought that acupuncture stimulates your body’s release of endorphins — your natural pain-relieving chemicals.
Other theories indicate that acupuncture influences your body’s autonomic nervous system and promotes the release of chemicals to regulate blood flow, reduce inflammation, and calm receptors in your brain.
In addition to offering long-term pain relief for conditions such as migraine headaches, low back pain, and neck pain, acupuncture may also improve symptoms associated with the following conditions:
As part of a comprehensive treatment plan, acupuncture can provide long-term relief from unpleasant symptoms or painful, chronic conditions.
Part of ancient medicine in China and the Middle East, cupping therapy is a treatment in which your provider attaches special cups to your skin to create suction. Cupping often helps with pain, inflammation, and blood flow. It promotes relaxation and well-being much like a deep tissue massage.
There are different methods of cupping therapy, including wet and dry cupping. In both cases, your provider puts a flammable substance such as alcohol in a glass, bamboo, or plastic cup. As the flame goes out, the cup goes upside down on your skin to create a vacuum.
The negative pressure pulls your skin into the cup as your blood vessels expand. Typically, the cups stay in place on your skin for about three minutes. Cupping can be used in conjunction with acupuncture or as a treatment by itself.
